Is your wardrobe following trends, or is it finally following you?

In 2026, personal style is becoming less about wearing what is popular and more about choosing what feels comfortable, confident, and unmistakably your own. THE BIG PICTURE

Style Is Becoming More Personal and Less Prescriptive

The Panel Station surveyed 221,557 consumers across 34 countries to understand how style, clothing, grooming, and confidence are evolving in 2026.

Comfort leads personal style, but self-expression remains important. Around 45.8% describe their style as comfortable, while 78.3% rate clothing’s role in expressing identity at four or five out of five. Quality, price, and fit matter more than brand, and 81.6% consider grooming highly important.

The trend is clear: consumers are not rejecting fashion. They are making it work on their own terms.

Comfort Is Becoming the New Style Authority

Comfort leads the style conversation, with 45.8% describing their clothing choices this way. Another 27.4% prefer a mix of styles, while 11% identify as trendy and 10% favour a minimal look. Only 5.7% say they have no fixed style.

For most people, clothing needs to fit everyday routines while still allowing room for mood, occasion, and personality. Open responses also show that style is closely linked to comfort, confidence, individuality, and self-expression. This suggests that personal style is becoming less about following strict trends and more about feeling authentic. Versatility also matters, as people look for clothes that can adapt to different settings and moments.

Clothing Still Carries Identity

Around 44.8% give clothing’s role in expressing identity the highest rating, while 33.5% rate it four. Only 5.4% give it one or two.

Comfort has not made clothing less meaningful. People are using practical choices to communicate who they are, with less emphasis on dressing for approval.

Fashion Shopping Is Becoming More Deliberate

Shopping is largely driven by need, with 29.9% buying clothes or accessories only when required. Another 20.6% shop every two to three months, while the remaining 49.5% make purchases at least once a month.

Quality is the strongest influence on buying decisions at 77.5%, followed by price at 67.6% and fit at 61.6%. Design matters to 51.5%, while brand ranks lower at 42.5%. The findings suggest that shoppers increasingly prioritise durability, comfort, usefulness, and overall value over brand recognition alone.

Experimentation Is Selective, Not Reckless

Consumers show a strong willingness to experiment, with 58.9% rating their openness to trying new styles at four or five out of five. Another 27.3% select the middle rating, while only 13.9% express low interest in exploring different looks.

People are open to change, but not at the cost of comfort, fit, or practicality. New styles are more likely to gain acceptance when they feel wearable, versatile, and easy to adapt to individual routines and preferences.

Grooming Has Joined the Style System

Grooming is a clear priority, with 81.6% rating it as highly important. Recommendations encourage 56.7% to try new products, while reviews influence 53%. Curiosity motivates 45.9%, followed by promotions at 42.2%, social media at 37.1%, and packaging at 25.9%.

These choices show that grooming decisions are shaped by both trust and discovery. People look to others for reassurance but remain open to experimenting with new products and routines. Personal care increasingly works alongside clothing as part of a connected approach to appearance, confidence, and self-expression.

Global Trends Inspire, but Do Not Dictate

Global fashion has a noticeable influence, with 56.5% rating its impact at four or five out of five. Another 25% select the middle rating, while 18.5% say global trends have little influence on their choices.

International styles may shape awareness and inspire new ideas, but comfort, quality, price, and fit remain stronger decision filters. Consumers are more likely to adapt individual elements than copy complete looks, creating personal styles that balance global inspiration with everyday practicality.

Inclusion Is Improving, but Confidence Is Cautious

Fashion appears to be moving towards greater inclusion, with 49.1% saying it has become more inclusive. Another 27.1% believe it may be improving, while 16.3% remain unsure. Only 7.4% feel that meaningful progress has not yet been made.

The overall direction is encouraging, but inclusion must extend beyond visibility. Wider representation, diverse sizing, cultural relevance, affordability, and accessibility will determine whether people experience the change in practical and meaningful ways.

The Future of Style

Style in 2026 is becoming more comfortable, intentional, inclusive, and personal. Consumers continue to value quality and fit, but they also want clothing and grooming choices that strengthen confidence, reflect personality, and support everyday life.

The future will be shaped by people who combine global inspiration with personal needs and by brands that make fashion practical, expressive, accessible, and welcoming to a wider range of identities.
