Think about the last time you felt content. Perhaps you were sharing a meal with family, enjoying an unhurried morning or realising that an unexpected expense would not disrupt your plans.

Money may have helped create that comfort. Yet the feeling itself could have come from connection, freedom or peace of mind.

The Panel Station’s Money & Meaning study, drawing on 311,272 completed responses, explores how these priorities fit together. Its findings invite us to consider what we want our money to make possible.

Why Does Financial Security Matter?

Extra money can open the door to enjoyment. For many respondents, however, the first priority would be preparing for tomorrow.

Asked what they would do with more money than they needed, 36% would save it for the future and 28.3% would invest it to grow their wealth. Together, almost two thirds would choose saving or investing first.

This suggests that surplus money can represent reassurance: a buffer against uncertainty and greater room to plan.

Enjoyment still has a place. Another 13.5% would choose travel or an experience. The responses show different ways of putting money towards something personally valuable.

Can Life Feel Rich Without Spending?

Some of the study’s most revealing answers concern things that require no purchase.

When asked what makes them feel rich without spending money, 32% chose feeling healthy and happy. Another 23.4% selected being surrounded by people they love.

These choices offer a useful reminder when financial success becomes the main measure of progress. Relationships and wellbeing also deserve attention in the life we are building.

A quiet evening with someone close or time spent doing something enjoyable may never appear on a financial statement. Their value can still be considerable.

What Does Having Enough Mean?

For 35.2% of respondents, a truly rich life means balancing money, happiness and purpose. Another 22.9% defined it as having the freedom to live life their way.

These answers suggest that personal fulfilment involves several priorities working together. Financial comfort matters alongside the ability to make choices that feel meaningful.

Defining enough begins with recognising your own needs. What helps you feel secure? Which relationships deserve more time? What would you like your income to support?

The study describes preferences rather than proving what creates happiness. Its broader invitation is valuable: give financial goals a clear purpose within the life you want to lead.

What Does Having Enough Make Possible?

Having enough might mean paying the bills without carrying the worry into bed. It could mean taking a day off when someone you love needs you, choosing work you enjoy or handling an unexpected expense without borrowing.

These possibilities give money a personal purpose. The amount matters because of the security and freedom it provides. Ask yourself what you want financial comfort to make room for.

Perhaps it is a slower morning, more time with family or the confidence to change direction. That answer can tell you more about your idea of a rich life than a bigger number alone.
