THE BIG PICTURE
What makes a footballer the greatest of all time? Is it the number of goals scored, the trophies won, the ability to perform under pressure or the influence a player leaves on the sport?
Few players have brought these questions into sharper focus than Lionel Messi.
His career has been defined by extraordinary individual performances, remarkable consistency and achievements at both club and international levels. Yet his 2022 World Cup victory with Argentina added another dimension to a legacy that had already earned him a place among football’s greatest players.
The Panel Station’s Lionel Messi Survey 2026, based on 310,195 completed responses, reveals that 80.6% of respondents believe Messi is definitely or probably the greatest footballer of all time. However, the findings also show that football greatness is not judged through trophies alone.
Fans consider skill, goals, consistency and memorable performances when evaluating a player’s contribution. While Messi enjoys considerable support, his comparison with Cristiano Ronaldo continues to divide opinion.
The larger story is about how fans recognise excellence, how defining moments influence public perception and what makes a sporting legacy endure.
Messi's GOAT Status Is Strong, but Football's Greatest Debate Continues
Messi has achieved something few players can claim: widespread recognition as one of football’s defining figures.
In the survey, 46.2% definitely consider Messi the greatest footballer ever, while another 34.4% say he probably deserves that distinction. Only 7.3% express a negative opinion, and 12.1% remain uncertain.
However, the picture becomes more nuanced when respondents compare Messi directly with Cristiano Ronaldo. While 42.3% favour Messi, 29.4% choose Ronaldo and 18.5% consider them equals. A further 9.8% are unsure.
These results illustrate how perceptions of greatness depend on the comparison being made. Someone may regard Messi as an exceptional footballer while also recognising Ronaldo’s achievements, longevity and distinctive playing style.
The continuing debate suggests that greatness is not measured through one universally accepted standard.
How Did the 2022 World Cup Change Messi's Legacy?
For much of his career, Messi’s individual brilliance and club achievements were widely recognised, but international success remained central to discussions about his legacy.
74.3% of respondents say Messi’s 2022 World Cup victory changed their perception of him greatly or somewhat.
Meanwhile, 88.7% give the World Cup a high importance rating when considering his legacy. When asked to identify the most important achievement for his legacy, 52.1% choose the World Cup.
Messi had already accumulated extraordinary records and individual honours before 2022. The World Cup did not create those achievements, but it gave many fans a powerful moment through which to appreciate the scale of his career.
For footballers competing at the highest level, this distinction matters. Consistent excellence establishes a reputation, while major victories can strengthen its place in sporting history.
Why Do Messi's Goals and Playing Style Leave Such a Strong Impression?
Among Messi’s individual qualities, goal-scoring attracts the greatest attention.
More than half of respondents, 52.6%, identify goals as something that stands out about Messi, while 33.3% select dribbling. Passing follows at 22.1%, creativity at 21.7%, consistency at 20.3% and vision at 18.1%.
These findings show that Messi’s reputation is not limited to the number of times he has scored.
The connection becomes particularly clear when respondents are asked what Messi will be remembered for most. Skills lead with 33.7%, followed by 25.8% who choose everything about his career.
This helps explain why technical qualities remain central to the conversation about greatness. Statistics record what a player accomplishes, while playing style shapes how those achievements are experienced and remembered
Can Messi's Legacy Be Separated From His Rivalry With Ronaldo?
The Messi-Ronaldo rivalry has become one of modern football’s most recognisable comparisons. The survey reinforces the importance of both players in discussions about football history.
When respondents could select multiple footballers for the GOAT conversation, 65.9% included Messi and 54.2% included Ronaldo. Other legendary figures also received recognition, including Pelé at 17.8% and Diego Maradona at 12.6%.
These results show that the discussion extends beyond one era, although Messi and Ronaldo occupy particularly prominent positions in this respondent group.

What Makes a Footballer's Legacy Last Beyond Their Career?
Greatness is often discussed through achievements, but legacy involves another question: how will a player be remembered when their playing days are over?
The survey provides a strong indication of Messi’s lasting reputation.
89.0% rate his influence on football at 4 or 5 out of 5, while 87.0% give a rating of 4 or 5 for the likelihood that he will be remembered as the GOAT.
His overall career also receives high recognition, with 89.7% awarding ratings of 4 or 5.
These figures suggest that respondents see Messi’s contribution as extending beyond individual matches, seasons and trophies. His career provides an example of how technical excellence, consistency and major achievements can reinforce one another over time.
The World Cup Is Messi's Most Memorable Achievement
Some sporting achievements become more than milestones in a player’s career. They become defining moments that shape how an entire generation remembers them. For Lionel Messi, Argentina’s victory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup appears to hold that significance.
The survey reveals that 57.9% of respondents identify the 2022 World Cup as one of Messi’s most memorable achievements, considerably ahead of his Barcelona titles (21.0%), Ballon d’Or awards (16.7%) and famous goals (13.0%). His Copa América victory and career goal-scoring achievements receive 11.5% and 10.1%, respectively.
These findings are particularly interesting given the extraordinary success Messi enjoyed long before winning the World Cup.
