THE BIG PICTURE

Looking good is no longer simply about following fashion or meeting traditional beauty standards. For many consumers, appearance is connected to personal identity, comfort, confidence and the way they present themselves in everyday life.

The Panel Station’s Style, Beauty & Self Trends 2026 research, covering 15 countries, reveals an interesting contrast. While 80.5% feel very or extremely confident about their appearance, an overwhelming 91% believe people face greater pressure to look good today than in the past.

The findings suggest that consumers are developing their own preferences while navigating social expectations, digital influences and the financial demands of maintaining their appearance.

Confidence Is High, but Appearance Pressure Remains

Although 79.7% report greater appearance confidence than a year ago, this does not mean concerns about physical appearance have disappeared.

Confidence often depends on circumstances, including professional situations, social occasions and personal interactions. Indeed, 67% say appearance concerns influence their decisions often or very often.

The findings suggest that feeling confident and experiencing pressure are not mutually exclusive. Consumers may feel comfortable with their appearance while remaining conscious of how others perceive them.

Clothing and Grooming Are Becoming Expressions of Identity

Clothing is the strongest individual contributor to appearance confidence, selected by 36.1%, followed by hair and hairstyle at 18.1% and skin or skincare at 13.4%.

Personal style also reflects individuality. While 32.3% prefer their own style, 29.1% adopt trends selectively and 20.6% enjoy following them.

Grooming remains equally relevant, with 84.4% considering it important to confidence. These findings suggest that consumers increasingly value products that reflect their personality, preferences and everyday needs rather than prescribed beauty ideals.

Social Media Influences How People See Themselves

Social media influences perceptions of attractiveness and style for 63.5% of respondents, while 49.8% compare their appearance with others often or very often.

However, its impact is not entirely negative. Around 64% report feeling more confident after seeing other people’s appearance online.

Social platforms can therefore offer inspiration and encourage experimentation, even as they expose consumers to expectations that may be difficult to maintain.

Looking Good Comes With Financial Expectations

One of the strongest findings concerns the perceived cost of appearance.

Around 61.2% feel some or considerable pressure to spend money on looking presentable, while 78.8% believe looking and feeling confident requires moderate or substantial spending.

For fashion and beauty brands, this highlights the importance of affordability, realistic messaging and products that deliver meaningful value without encouraging unnecessary consumption.

The Bigger Picture: Confidence on Personal Terms

The future of beauty and style is increasingly about balancing individuality with social expectations.

Consumers want to express themselves, feel comfortable and look presentable without constantly adjusting to changing standards. For brands, the opportunity lies in supporting these priorities through relevant products, inclusive communication and credible benefits.

Ultimately, confidence is not simply about looking different or better. It is about feeling comfortable with how one chooses to look.
