Environment & Everyday Life Trends 2026: Global Eco-Living Report

Eco-friendly living in 2026 is taking shape through ordinary decisions: reusing a bag, switching off a light, avoiding plastic, or comparing products before checkout. Sustainability is moving from policy debates into shopping, travel, and household routines.

Across 37 countries, 371,698 consumers told Panel Station how they think about climate change, what green habits they practise, what they buy, and what still gets in the way.

The picture is encouraging, but not uncomplicated. Awareness is high, sustainable shopping is growing, and many people want to do more. Yet cost, access, and convenience continue to shape what is realistically possible. The result is a form of sustainability that is practical, gradual, and increasingly woven into daily life.

THE BIG PICTURE

Sustainability Has Entered the Daily Routine

The Panel Station surveyed 371,698 consumers across 37 countries to explore environmental awareness, climate concern, green habits, sustainable shopping, business trust, and future intentions.

Concern is high and action is already visible. Some 78.4% rate their awareness of environmental issues at four or five out of five, while 79.8% express similarly high concern about climate change. Nearly three-quarters practise eco-friendly habits always or often, and 91.1% have purchased an eco-friendly product at least once.

Yet greener choices are not always easy. Cost leads the barriers at 50.9%, followed by limited product access at 42.7%. Affordability and availability still decide how far good intentions can go.

Green Living Is Moving From Intent to Habit

Eco-consciousness is becoming more than a good intention. More than 78% of respondents say they are highly aware of environmental issues, while nearly 80% are deeply concerned about climate change.

And that awareness is showing up in daily life. Around one-third always practise eco-friendly habits, while 39.7% do so often. Only 3.7% rarely or never make environmentally conscious choices, suggesting that for many consumers, greener living is becoming less of an occasional effort and more of an everyday habit.

Small Habits Are Powering the Green Shift

The green transition is being built through familiar everyday actions. Recycling leads at 64.2%, followed closely by reducing plastic use, saving electricity, and reusing items. Water conservation reaches 53.5%, while public transport and eco-friendly product choices see lower participation.

The pattern is clear: people are starting with changes they can make easily and immediately. Habits that fit naturally into home life gain the most traction, while those requiring new products, infrastructure, or major lifestyle changes lag behind. For many consumers, sustainability begins with what they can control today.

Sustainable Shopping Is No Longer Niche

Eco-friendly products have moved firmly into the shopping basket. Only 8.9% of respondents say they have never purchased one, while half have tried them once or twice and 41% now buy them regularly.

But a green label alone is not enough to win consumers over. Quality influences 68.4% of sustainable purchases, while price matters to 63.5%. The message for brands is clear: sustainability may attract attention, but products still need to perform well and feel worth the money.

The Greenest Choice Still Has a Price Tag

Wanting to live sustainably and being able to afford it are not always the same thing. Cost is the biggest barrier for 50.9% of respondents, while 42.7% struggle with access to suitable eco-friendly options. Convenience holds back another 29.6%, while fewer point to a lack of knowledge or motivation.

The challenge, then, may not be convincing people to care. Many already do. The bigger opportunity is closing the gap between intention and action by making sustainable choices more affordable, accessible, and easy to fit into everyday life.

Green Claims Need to Earn Trust

Corporate sustainability is getting attention, but not automatic belief. Only 18.6% of respondents say companies always genuinely care about the environment. Half believe businesses care sometimes, while 31.2% say they rarely or never do.

Consumers appear willing to support brands that act responsibly, but words alone are not enough. Trust is built through durable products, responsible packaging, fair pricing, credible claims, and visible progress. In 2026, sustainability is not just something companies can say. It is something they have to prove.

Green Intent Is Ready for Its Next Step

The willingness to do more is already there. Around 78.2% of respondents rate their likelihood of adopting more eco-friendly habits next year at four or five. Open responses point to practical actions such as reducing plastic, recycling more, conserving energy and water, reusing bags, avoiding litter, and planting trees.

The next phase of sustainable living may therefore depend less on changing attitudes and more on making action easier. When greener choices are affordable, accessible, and convenient, intention has a much better chance of becoming routine.

THE FUTURE OF EVERYDAY SUSTAINABILITY

Environmental action in 2026 is becoming less about dramatic lifestyle changes and more about the small choices people repeat every day. Consumers are recycling, reusing everyday items, conserving water and electricity, cutting down on plastic, and experimenting with sustainable products—all while balancing cost, convenience, and availability.

That shift matters because it shows that sustainability is gradually moving from intention into routine. People appear willing to make greener choices, but their ability to do so still depends heavily on what is practical. When sustainable products cost more, are difficult to find, or require significant changes to established habits, good intentions can quickly lose momentum.

That is where individual intent, business responsibility, and public systems need to come together—and where sustainable living can move from a personal effort to an everyday norm.
